Veneers or teeth whitening: which is right for you?
How teeth whitening and veneers differ in what they change, how long they last, and who they suit.
Side by side
| Teeth whitening | Veneers | |
|---|---|---|
| What it changes | Color only | Color, shape, size and small gaps |
| Is the tooth reshaped? | No | Usually a thin layer of enamel is removed, so it cannot be undone |
| How long it lasts | Fades over time and can be touched up | Long-lasting with good care, but may eventually need replacing |
| Crowns and fillings | Not lightened | Can be matched as part of the plan |
Whitening may suit you if
- Your teeth are healthy and you like their shape
- You mainly want them a few shades lighter
Veneers may suit you if
- You want to change the shape or size of some teeth, or close small gaps
- Teeth are chipped or have stains that whitening does not lift
Good to know
Whitening can make teeth feel sensitive for a short time. Veneers come in porcelain or zirconia, and gums should be healthy before either treatment. A consultation is the best way to see which option fits your teeth and your goals.
